Meadows Not Yet Ready for Dancing Cows on First Day of Spring

Wed, 21 Mar 2018

NETHERLANDS - Spring officially started yesterday, 20 March. For many years, the FrieslandCampina brand Campina has celebrated the start of the farmers’ season with the first time of outdoor grazing of the year on this day.

Unfortunately, this year it is still too early for spring fever: as a result of the low temperatures of last weekend, the meadow is not ready yet for welcoming the dancing and jumping cows for grazing.

Therefore the outdoor grazing cannot take place at the farm of farmer Niels on the first day of spring. The cows will be merrily jumping around in the meadow as soon as the weather will allow for this.

Campina farmer Niels from Leusden (the Netherlands), who was supposed to be the first to put out the cows into the meadow this year, was more than ready for the first spring day and the cows were very eager to go out.

However, the weather is uncontrollable and in view of the well-being of the cows, it was decided to postpone the first outdoor grazing day.

"The frost of the past few days has frozen the meadow. As a result of this, the grass stopped growing and it is not green and nutritious enough yet.

"As a farmer I decide myself when I put out the cows and, of course, nature plays a decisive role in this.

"It is beyond saying that I am really looking forward to the first pretty spring day on which the cows will eventually go into the meadow."
